Product USA. A

METHOD The method may afford a simple, gentle way to make aromatic intermediates. The inventor treats the aromatic substrate with NaCl, bromide, nitrite or thiocyanate, plus the Co.'s fluorinating agent, 1-chloromethyl-4-fluoro-1,4-diazonia
bicyclo[2.2.2]octane. Substrates include benzene, toluene, chloro- & bromobenzenes, phenol, anisol, & N-alkyl- & N,N-
dialkylanilines.
For example, reaction of anisole, Na thiocyanate, & the fluorinating agent yields 62% of p-methoxyphenyl thiocyana
te with a trace of the ortho-substituted ester. The inventor suggests that F+ oxidizes SCN anion to a radical, which attacks the substrate. Further oxidation & neutralization generate the ptodt
