Method of converting an SiO2 portion of a smectite clay to a dioctahedral smectite clay - Mixing the smectite clay & SiO2 portion thereof with water to form smectite clay/SiO2/Water slurry having a pH - Adjusting pH to 8.5-10 - Heating to > 150C - Adding to slurry, metals in the form of hydroxides, selected from Al hydroxide etc in at least stoichiometric amount to form reaction mixt for reaction with SiO2 in a closed reaction vessel, at > 150C for time sufficient to react the added me tals with the SiO2 to form a dioctahedral clay such that the wt ratio of hydroxides rel. to SiO2 are SiO2 (59.64%); Al(OH)3 (32.32%); Mg(OH)2 (4.77%) & NaOH (3.27%) |
