TECHNOLOGY The authors prepd the complex by hitching together a RuCl2 compd (I) & allyl 2-Br-2-Me pro
pionate (II). Said bifunctional complex was confirmed of mediating independently
(1) First ring-opening metathesis polymn of cyclo
octadiene, initiated by (I) comp of complex
(2) Second Atom-transfer radical polymn of MMA initiated by (II) in conjunction with (I)
(3) Third reaction - hydrogenation - of the alkene bonds in the copolymer - is induced at the conclusion of the co-polymn by exposing the reaction vessel to stream of H2, which transforms the Ru complex into a known hydrogenation catalyst
In various experiments, the authors show that
- Copolymers are diblock &
- Two different types of polymn occur simultaneously under appropriate conditions
