DISCOVERY A TransGenic mosquito without capacity of malaria transmission, may integrate within some years, tools of disease combat, that kills one person every 30 sec in planet.
Malaria research gained new impetus with genomic revolution. The genoma of “Plasmodium falciparum” & of “Anopheles gambiae” (malaria transmi
ssor in Africa) have been sequenced. This added to human genoma sequen
cing, provided new tools to deal with the disease
The researchers created a “artificial gene” based on peptide – that prevents the parasite to go through mosquito’s intestine’s wall & reach the salivary glands
To this it was added a DNA portion that activates the said peptide when mosquito ingests blood. Said gene was introduced in insect’s embryo. Plasmo
dium present in saliva enter person’s organism. “Said peptide binds to the same receptors that parasite uses to get to salivary glands. That is, it blocks the passage of parasite & prevents its transmission.
The researchers admit also, that the use of only one gene to block the transmission is not 100% efficient. “Ideal would be to work with 2 – 3 genes. Researchers worked with “Anopheles stephensi”, more common in India. For
scientists, when a anopheles (unable to transmit the disease) be produced, it will be possible to disinfect a “natural” mosquito contaminated area, eliminate most of them & introduce the transgenic mosquito
