Despite the hefty price tag, replacing solvent stills may save money over the long term by cutting waste and energy consumption, according to a recent study at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Unlike solvent stills, the new systems don't need to be placed inside safety hoods, which are costly to operate. Wisconsin's chemistry department built its own systems at a fraction of the cost of those commercially available. Sharing the systems could also defray their cost. |
