TECHNOLOGY he article by Mairin Brennan titled "Waterworks" (C&EN, April 9, page 32) provided a succinct yet thorough overview of the state of research, development, and use of membrane technology for water treatment technology. I was especially struck by the remarks of Robert Brotherton that "what happens in the laboratory does not necessarily replicate itself in normal plant operation."

A group of individuals from academia, industry, and state and local government here in Michigan have formed a nonprofit organization, the Global Enterprise for Water Technology (GEWT), for the express purpose of dealing with the issue of taking the development of water treatment technology from laboratory scale to full-plant scale. We have established a presence at the former Grand Rapids, Mich., water treatment plant, now named Clearwater Plaza. We are in the process of developing it into a plant-scale, off-line facility that can be used to conduct experiments at process flow rates ranging from a few liters per minute up to 7,500 m3 per day (2 million gal per day).

GEWT invites all those interested in assisting in the development of the facility and/or in using it for their research and development to contact us.
