TECHNOLOGY |
Together with Partner Co., we have announced our intent to commercialize a new method for producing ascorbic acid, more popularly known as vitamin C, from glucose, a product refined from corn. Using metabolic pathway engineering, our biotechnology process eliminates several steps from traditional chemical synthesis, resulting in significantly lower production costs and higher yields. The implications of this technological breakthrough go far beyond this one particular product. We built a pathway to ascorbic acid, but we have the ability to add other enzymes to divert synthesis toward other products. The work toward this breakthrough was financed by a consortium of companies and the U.S. Department of Commerce's Advanced Technology Program, which supports the development of new technologies that promise major economic benefits to the nation. |
