Co. has technology for the microbial production of Vitamin C in a one-step process from glucose. Co. elucidated the ascorbic acid biosynthetic pathway by utilizing blocked mutants of Prototheca,a colorless microalga, to identify key enzyme activities and to convert intermediates to ascorbic acid. Additional work focused on the biochemistry of the pathway using peas and Arabidopsisfor detecting key enzyme activities with scientific details described in (See Literature Ref.) Now that this pathway has been identified, research is underway to overexpress these genes for increased ascorbic acid production. Co. is representing this technology by offering licenses for microbial production of ascorbic acid
