Nonalloying silver/cobalt nanocrystals

High-purity silver/cobalt composite nanocrystals prepared by a colloidal chemistry route have been shown to exist as bimetallic core-shell particles. AUTHOR and coworkers prepared the Ag/Co particles from Co2(CO)8 and AgClO4 using oleic acid and tridodecylamine as surfactants. Transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic data reveal that the particles consist of a Ag core and a Co shell and have a diameter of around 12 nm. There is no evidence of CoO in the Co shell or of Ag/Co alloy particles. The reason for the oxidative stability of the Co shell is not yet understood, the authors say, although it indicates a strong interaction between the two elements within the particles.
